• Self Storage FAQs
  • What is my first step?

Use our convenient View Rates, Sizes and Reserve a Unit Today section of our website www.hwy43storage.com to help you choose the unit that is the perfect size for your needs. Then all you have to do is come in to our business office to complete the reservation process and your self storage unit will be ready when you are.

  • What is climate control?

Climate control (also known as “temperature controlled”) is one of the features that we offer at Hwy 43 Self Storage.  These units are cooled in the summer, heated in the winter and have year round controlled humidity. Our climate controlled units maintain a temperature of 50 to 85 degrees. Severe hot or cold temperature swings can damage items such as wood furniture, electronics, art, photos , various forms of plastics and so on.  This feature helps protect your belongings and is also ideal for clients who tend to visit their storage space frequently. Many times clients will rent a smaller climate controlled space for their more delicate items and a larger, non-climate controlled space for the rest of their belongings. We want to provide you with the peace of mind and the best options for your belongings.

  • Is there an indoor unloading or loading area if I rent a climate controlled unit?

Yes.  This is a very appealing feature for our clients and allows ease of move in during any Wisconsin weather conditions.  The garage area will accommodate up to a 20' moving van or moving truck with the overhead door closed.  The overhead door to this enclosed load in/load out area can be open for a maximum time of 10 minutes at a time.

  • Do you have boxes and other packing products available for purchase?

We do not currently offer moving supplies for purchase.

  • Is there any particular way to arrange things in my storage space?

Pack the storage space carefully.  Most of our spaces are eight feet tall so you can stack your items to maximize the space.  Leave air space around the perimeter to aid ventilation. Place cardboard or a pallet on concrete floors and do not lean items against walls.  Leave a walkway to the rear of your space for easy access. Place frequently used items near the door. Think of ways to conserve space (i.e. do the legs come off the table?  Can your linens be placed inside the dresser drawers? How about tipping your mattress up on its end?). We always recommend using furniture covers, mattress covers and the like to keep items as clean as possible inside your unit.

  • What is the best way to pack up boxes and containers to place into storage?

Fill containers to capacity.  Partially full or bulging cartons may tip or collapse.  Heavy items like books or tools should be packed in small boxes so they are easy to lift.  Protect your fragile goods with packing (i.e. bubble packs, or other) and place them near the top of your storage space.  Label boxes. Take home a list of your labeled boxes for easy reference when you need to locate your items.

  • What happens if I need a different size unit upon moving in or as time goes on?

No problem.  If the unit size you want is available at our facility, just let our management team know you would like to switch and we can transfer you into another unit. With month-to-month rental agreements, you can conveniently increase or decrease your unit size (subject to availability).

  • How do I report any maintenance issues such as gate not opening or if there is a light out?

During our facility office hours, please report any issue to our management team onsite immediately. If you notice the issue after office hours, please call our main number at 262-723-6450 to leave a message or call the emergency number shown on site.

  • Does your facility accommodate large moving trucks?

    Yes

  • Do you have dumpster access?

No, our facility does not have dumpster access.  All garbage must be removed by the tenant.

  • Can I have packages delivered to my storage unit?

Yes! If you need to have deliveries made when you cannot be here we can make arrangements to accept the deliveries for you. Please contact our business office to learn more details.

  • What do I need to do to move out?

Since our rental agreements for our standard units are a month to month contract, if you occupy the unit at the first of the month, you are obligated for that given month.  As outlined in the Wisconsin State Statute 704.19(3) we require tenants to provide a 30 day vacating notice.  We ask that you stop in or call our office. On your scheduled move-out day make sure the unit is completely empty, cleaned, swept and your lock has been removed.  One of our management team will then inspect your unit.

  • Do fluids need to be drained for vehicle storage?

We do not require that fluids be completely drained.  Small amounts of oil and gas can remain during storage.  We request that you place cardboard underneath any area that has fluids in case of a leak.  It is the responsibility of the tenant to maintain the floors of the storage units they are renting.

  • Is my initial monthly storage rental rate guaranteed for as long as I rent my storage unit?

At Hwy 43 Self Storage, we strive to provide a value to our clients through competitive pricing and by maintaining a clean, safe, and secure facility with the best possible customer service. Please keep in mind that your original monthly rate is not guaranteed for as long as you rent your storage unit.  From time to time, we may find it necessary to make adjustments to our clients’ rental rates in order to keep up with the rising costs associated with providing the best possible customer service and a clean, secure facility.

  • Do you require a security deposit and administration cost?

There is a non-refundable administrative cost of $25 for all new clients.  We currently do not collect a security deposit.

  • Is my security deposit refundable?

Yes, your security deposit can be refundable.  Once you provide proper vacating notice, your unit should be cleaned, swept out and your lock removed.  On your move out day, one of our management team will inspect the unit and if applicable, your deposit will be refunded in the form of a check to the current address we have for you in our records.

  • What if I am late in making my payment?

Your monthly rent is due by the first day of each month. Hwy 43 Self Storage provides a five day grace period before charging a late fee on the 6th day past a payment due date. The late fee of $10 is assessed according to Wisconsin local self storage law. For further details please refer to your lease or contact our office. Late fees cannot be waived and the full balance must be paid immediately to avoid foreclosure. No partial payments are accepted. Please also note that until your account is paid in full, access to your unit may be denied, your gate code access is removed and your unit will be over-locked.

  • How long after my account is delinquent before my items will go to auction/lien sale?

The length of time for a past-due account to be placed in auction varies by state law.  It is our recommendation that you contact our management team to discuss your account as soon as possible if your payment is late. Hwy 43 Self Storage will provide written notice to your email address or physical address listed on your account, depending on requirements of the state law.  Many times our management team will try to contact a client that is in default by phone prior to an auction process. As a client, it is your responsibility to make sure we have accurate, up-to-date contact information associated with your account, and to pay your bill on time.

  • Is there a lien sale cost and what happens if my items go to auction/lien sale?

Yes, there is a cost of $125 to have a lien sale.  Once the unit is sold the proceeds are applied to your outstanding balance. If the proceeds are higher than the amount due, a check for the difference will be sent to the original person leasing the storage unit. If the proceeds are lower than the outstanding balance the account will be sent to collections.
